I am surprised, I have been looking in other forums and some people choose to install Microsoft Windows illegally. When I made the change from Microsoft to Linux (Ubuntu) I've never looked back. Ubuntu and the Ubuntu community are fantastic, the community forum is like it's own little family, people helping each other in many ways, I've found Ubuntu to be far more stable than when I was using Windows, many times I would have to reset windows because it would crash, Ubuntu is so stable, then there's drivers, I remember installing my printer on Windows, it would take around 6 minutes to setup, now when I setup my printer on Ubuntu, it's like the true meaning of Plug-and-Play, I plugged my printer in, and less than 30 seconds later it was setup ready to use, my jaw fell to the flaw, this in itself made me love Ubuntu even more, the software available for Ubuntu is outstanding, the Ubuntu Software Center basically has everything one would need, no messing about having to spend hours searching on Google, I remember spending many of hours searching for some program on Google, and also the software for Ubuntu is Free, not only the Operating System but everything I could ever want is Free, I love Ubuntu and it's community so much, I'm proud I've never looked back, my next task is to help as I learn, also to spread the Ubuntu message to people.

Hi,

First post, so apologies if this is in the wrong section, had a look but couldn't find an answer in the other threads either, but did pick up a few tips.

Anyway, I cant run games without them playing frame by frame, excruciatingly slowly. Now I was not expecting my old compaq to be able to handle too much, but it cant even handle SuperTux.

So I was wondering do I need new drivers, or is it just the shockingly poor integrated grphics card I have:

Not sure if this helps:

I have an Ubuntu 9.04 x64 setup with an nVidia 9800 video card with the 180.44 nVidia drivers.

It all works fairly well except for one odd issue. The main desktop on (Display 0) shows the full desktop and it is all usable. The second Desktop (Display 1) appears fine except that the desktop seems cut off. The background displays similar to a 4/3 aspect ratio left aligned with the space after the desktop background black. I can move my mouse past the desktop background and into the black space, but any application I open is confined to the smaller space where the desktop background image is.

I have the resolution set to the Native resolution and frequency for that monitor and besides this odd issue I am very happy with the configuration.

Any ideas?

The idea is to set it up the PC to boot into firefox in full screen mode, and set her homepage to a RSS feed of stuff she will like.

She will have no keyboard

Using the 21inch touch screen she can then touch any of the items she finds interesting.

To shut down she just presses the power button.

The one remaining question is how she moves the windows around. When Firefox is on very high zoom you need to be able to easily scroll vertically and horizontally.

Will a standard USB joystick do this? Can I set a button on the joystick to take her back to her firefox homepage?

I thought I'd try Eclipse as an IDE for my programming (still learning) in Python. Mainly because I heard good things about the Pydev plugin. However, I am not having much luck with it so far.

I downloaded two versions of Eclipse 3.5.1, both eclipse-SDK-3.5.1-linux-gtk.tar.gz (of about 162 MB) and eclipse-platform-3.5.1-linux-gtk.tar.gz (47 MB). I am experiencing exactly the same problem with both editions. The version of Java that I have installed (through apt-get) is "1.6.0_15" (packages sun-java6-jre and sun-java6-jdk).

With both Eclipses, after I unpack them, I am unable to get updating or installing new software (plugins) to work. I would go to Help - Install New Software and select an update source from the drop down list, but nothing shows up for selection. Oddly enough, scrollbars show up in the empty list of available software, as if the program "wants" to show some items, but can't. See (un)available software.jpg.

Something else that doesn't seem to work is adding a new site to the list. I would click the Add button and give the site's details, like in can't add site.jpg but when I click OK nothing happens. The little dialog window just sits there, until I click Cancel.

Am I doing something wrong, or is there some known problem? I would appreciate any sort of insight.
