Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
After messing around with stuff apparently here is a weird solution.
What happened was after logging in, my computer sat there with virtually no activity for about 8s before starting the login process. I disconnected everything connected to my computer and unchecked gnome-wm from sessions. I login and it loads everything straight away though the desktop was ugly. I rechecked everything in sessions and now the login is responsive and under 15s which is acceptable.
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
I have the same problem, I did a upgrade from hardy. When logging in, it takes much longer as usual.
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
Ditto... Experiencing the exact same issue! Using Hardy, it took 5-10 secs to log in with my wallpaper emerging virtually instantly, after upgrading to Intrepid, it takes about 20 seconds before anything happens! When I hit "enter" from log in, the screen turns into that "ubuntu-brown" color and then it just seems to stop doing anything for 20 secs and then suddenly, the welcome sound plays and it starts up in 4-5 secs...
The computer is a T7300 Core2Duo 2.0 GHz, 2 Gb RAM, 8600 GS (256 mb), 7200 RPM HDD... So I don't think it is lack of performance which is the issue.
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
I have also found login incredibly slow taking 15 to 20 seconds before doing a thing. Disable gnome-gm and loads in substantially quicker but as aramadia says ugly. Re-enable the gnome-gm back to 15/20 wait?
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
Okay, so I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Ubuntu, but looking through the Log-files, I've found these three lines in the deamon.log which seems to appear on each start-up and it lasts for about 20 seconds:
Quote:
Oct 30 21:43:34 morten-laptop x-session-manager[6274]: WARNING: Unable to find provider 'gnome-wm' of required component 'windowmanager'
Oct 30 21:43:45 morten-laptop x-session-manager[6274]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-wm.desktop' failed to register before timeout
Oct 30 21:43:55 morten-laptop x-session-manager[6274]: WARNING: Application 'libcanberra-login-sound.desktop' failed to register before timeout
Does this have anything to do with this issue or am I just wasting everybodies time on this?
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
Iv'e had this 'problem' too, but look at it this way: It's still faster than Vista.
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
I have the same messages too:

Oct 30 23:48:44 m1530 pulseaudio[15958]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-x11-xsmp" (argument: ""): initialization failed.
Clearly intrepid wasn't ready for release. The problem is still recurring.
Re: Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
Fixed!
Just figured it out. The bug has to do with compiz-fusion. In order to login quickly go to System->Preferences->Appearance->Visual Effects and set it to None.
I wonder if this is the same bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/259385
Re: [SOLVED] Slow Intrepid 8.10 Login
This is not really a fix, but merely a workaround. If I actually want to use compiz-fusion I've to enable it everytime I log in?
At least when I want a fast login.
