wireless works like a charm now.

I basically followed all the instructions that Brandon88 followed up until this point, where I just got too frustrated and did a reboot.

Surprise surprise, wireless started working again.

I've done so much meddling with my system I can't even get the order straight, but I'll briefly try to recap. I started with a fresh 8.10 AMD64 Xubuntu install on a Comapq Presario v2000 with an AMD Turion 64. Here's what lshw -C network gives me:

I started with this thread first, since it worked on my Wubi'd 8.04 Ubuntu. It didn't work this time, however, so I went here and went through the process here. Then I came across this thread and followed the instructions everyone (you've been a tremendous help, by the way. Thanks) posted for Brandon88tube, since he has the same wireless chip I do. This included enabling proprietary drivers. When I got to atomizer's post, I restarted for the hell of it and wireless suddenly started working.

Hopefully someone can make more sense of it than I can. But as far as I know, it might just have been a lucky combination of steps specific to my laptop.

Again, thanks to the entire community. It takes work, but it DOES work.

    Re: Broadcom Wireless for 8.10

Ok I will be the first to admit I may be way off base here, so apologies if this is a stupid reply.

Im using a Belkin card with the broadcom chipset and after a lot of searching, I found that all I had to do was open up Synaptic Package Manager (enter password) search for "bcm43xx-fwcutter" and install.

It extracts your chipset info, looks on the Internet for a compatible windows driver and installs, running it via ndiswrapper. After doing that I never had any trouble.

Again sorry if im way off here, just thought it might be of help

    Re: Broadcom Wireless for 8.10

    Hi there,

I'm about going crazy. I have a Dell 1420 with wireless card 1395, i just did a fresh install of 8.10, and everything is great but I can't get any webpages or email. I do connect to a wireless or wired connection but it just won't go. I thought it could be a drivers thing and installed ndiswrapper and tried a bunch of things all I got was to make the network wireless connection unstable and still no success.

Please can someone help? In case it helps here go the outputs of lspci and lshw -C network. Really really appreciatte your help.

You might try the following first:
    Code:
sudo modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb ndiswrapper wl
    sudo modprobe wl
    sudo ifconfig eth1 up

Still not working. From the beginning I could do the scan and get the networks around. It just would not let me surf or get email, I could ping webpages, though. Trying to fix this I installed (downloading it with a different computer) ndiswrapper and a few different drivers.

I have seen an interesting post that may help me but it requires having an internet connection to do apt-get and download some other stuff, so couldn't follow it. I have access to internet through my wife's computer. The thread I talk about is:
    HTML Code:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=859580
But it is also true that I can't surf when connected wired, so... maybe my problem is not a driver problem, but maybe it is now after all I did to ubuntu!!

Hope that saves you some time.
I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 3days back (new user from XP) and the way you said works great for my BMC4306 card.
    Thanks

    Re: Broadcom Wireless for 8.10

    Hi
Here's the thing. Loaded 8.10 onto my box and it found my broadcom 4306, brought up harware drivers, downloaded firmware and bingo connected to my wireless network via network manager. However, i now want to turn this box into a family server via wireless( i know wireless server not a good idea) i load 8.10 server edition and get samba going via lan. I then do sudo apt-get install bcm-fwcutter and it installs fine and picks up my 4306 as in desktop edition however i am now stuck. there appears to be no wpa_supplicant.conf how do i get a wireless connection? i have no Gui?

    Re: Broadcom Wireless for 8.10

    Hello all!

I'm a little new to this so bear with me...

I have a Broadcom 4310 wireless card (apparently not supported by the linux drivers) but I have successfully followed the instructions here http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php to get my wireless up and running.

However when I reboot the wireless card is deactivated and I need to run the final part of the readme instructions again

"Make available 802.11 TKIP crypto module:
    modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip
    Insert the Broadcom wl module:
    insmod <path>/wl.ko"

Although my network settings are remembered...

I think that this means the module is not inserting properly? Can anyone shed any light as to how I can keep the module through the boot?

    Thanks!
    Rebecca

    Again, thanks
I will either find a way, or make one.
