    Re: Broadcom Wireless for 8.10

    Hello all:
I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 8.10, and currently only wl is enabled and Broadcom B43 wireless driver is disabled, and my wireless is not working, any suggestions?

    Thanks;

If you have an internet connection in Ubuntu without wireless, either the b43 or Broadcom STA (wl) driver will work. You should be able to select the Broadcom STA driver from System->Administration->Hardware Drivers. If you have not run any updates you might need to go into the Terminal and do the following:
    Code:
sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb wl
    sudo modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip
    sudo modprobe wl
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
    sudo iwlist scan
If it does not connect, please post the following results from the Terminal:
    Code:
    lsmod|grep -e b4 -e ssb -e wl -e ieee80211
    modprobe --show-depends wl
    lshw -C network

Can you post your lspci -nnm info? It will help us see which card is producing those results.

I have the b43 driver installed and activated via the "Hardware Drivers" in the System menu on a fresh install of 8.10, after re-boot I have to enter the following on the terminal to activate and connect to my wireless network:

    sudo modprobe -r b43
    sudo modprobe -r b44
    sudo modprobe -r ssb
    sudo modprobe b44
    sudo modprobe -r b43
    sudo modprobe b43

When the first command is entered the Network manager appears in panel, when the last entry is run to re-start the b43 driver the card acquires an IP address from my wireless router.

    How do I automate this?

    Iain
Just add those commands to /etc/rc.local without the sudo and those commands will run when the system starts up.

my wife has a BCM4328 and i can get it on the web w/ the following

    Code:
    courtney@Cortana:~$ sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb wl
FATAL: Module ssb is in use.
    courtney@Cortana:~$ sudo modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip
    courtney@Cortana:~$ sudo modprobe wl
    courtney@Cortana:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

    courtney@Cortana:~$
You have a b44 driver for your ethernet card. Because of this, you will need to have a couple extra commands:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb wl
    sudo modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip
    sudo modprobe wl
    sudo modprobe b44
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

going through the other posts here, my computer sees the broadcom 4312 card.

Sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb ndiswrapper wl
gives me an error: FATAL Module ssb is in use.

    Sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
gives me an error: wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device.

I removed and then reinstalled the b43-fwcutter, and said yes if I wanted it to fetch and install.
You will need to check and see if you have a Broadcom wired network card. If you go into the Terminal and type:
    Code:
    lshw -C network
If you see a Broadcom 44xx series card, then you have the b44 driver. That means you will have to remove that driver before you can remove the ssb:
    Code:
sudo modprobe -r b43 b44 ssb ndiswrapper wl
    sudo modprobe b43
    sudo modprobe b44
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

I'm still at a loss for that.

This was temporary. You can try this (it has not been thoroughly tested yet):
    Code:
    echo -e '#ssb workaround, added `date`\ninstall wl modprobe -r b43 b44 b43legacy ssb; modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip; modprobe --ignore-install wl $CMDLINE_OPTS; modprobe ssb; modprobe b44;' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/wl
The main part that I have added is the modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip. This is the part that is missing in the dependencies for wl.
